The share prices of Pfizer Inc (PFE) and BioNTech S.E (BNTX) were up 1.4% and 9.6% on Friday. The duo filed their application with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday for an emergency use authorization (EUA) in the United States for their vaccine candidate against Covid-19. On Wednesday, the companies said that their candidate for the vaccine had finally achieved 95% efficacy and that it had no significant side effects.
Pfizer expects the FDA to grant its EUA by mid-December, said the drugmaker. In the process, it hopes to start deliveries. It is estimated that fifty million doses will be available by 2020 and 25 million people will be vaccinated. A FDA advisory committee is expected to meet on 8-10 December to discuss the vaccine of Pfizer and BioNTech, a source from Reuters said, adding the agenda could still be altered.
Pfizer/BioNTech’s vaccine and that of Moderna Inc (MRNA) (up 5.2 percent) are both able to receive the similar authorization in the European Union in December, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday. In order to obtain hundreds of millions of doses of vaccines produced by Pfizer/BioNTech and Curevac N.V. Inc (CVAC) (up 5.97%), the EU could invest more than $10 billion, Reuters sources close to the discussions have said. The EU will directly invest $4.65 billion on Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines, or $18.34 per dose, according to the agency.
On the vaccine front, a Chinese vaccine laboratory Sinovac is also active as it may have the first clinical trial results of its vaccine candidate for Covid as early as next month, according to one of its founders.
Furthermore, Joe Biden, who made the war against coronavirus the focus of his early term, guaranteed that amid the revival of the pandemic, he would not enforce a “nation-wide lockdown” in the United States. “No circumstance could justify total national lockdown in my view. I think that would be counterproductive,” he said. “I will not stop the financial progress. I will stop the virus,” he said, claiming that every state, every community, can be different.
